Rabbit care
Rabbits are mostly loved by children. However, hardly children want such cuddly pets. Rabbits run fast and difficult to cuddle. Being prey animals, they get frightened easily. They are delicate animals and cannot take rough handling. However, they have powerful hind limbs they can easily inflict the nasty scratches. If they are not held properly, they can easily hurt their backs. For children, placing the rabbit on ground is best. Children can play with it easily and it would not even hurt it.
Housing and feeding
Rabbits too can be housetrained just like any other pets. You can teach them to use litter tray. The rabbit would enjoy staying with your company instead of staying alone somewhere in the garden locked away. A natural home could be created for the rabbit also. Take your pet outdoors sometimes as it is important that he gets some sunshine and lot of fresh grass.
They require a high roughage diet. Their food, about 98% would include high quality fresh grass. Feeding a lot of grass could avoid any teeth disease and preventing from overgrown incisors. If your rabbit is running in a garden, then make sure the garden is free from chemicals and weed killers. If their stomach is disturbed, then you need to cut down the green for few days. However, if his stomach does not get better, then you should seek for vet’s help. Commercial treats consist of very high fats. The rabbits cannot burn off these fats easily. Thus, you might find your rabbit overweight within no time. This excessive weight gets stored in the arteries and liver. Thus, it is preferred to feed rabbits with carrots, apples, hard bread, and fruitfood as it is easier to chew and cheap.
Disease and vaccination
Myxomatosis is a virus spread due to insect sucking. Swollen eyes, ears and head are common signs for Myxomatosis. Due to this virus, the rabbit would stop eating and viewing would also be a problem. This would lead to its death within next 10 – 18 days. Thus, yearly vaccination would be ideal. Flea treatment for your rabbit too could be taken.
Snuffles are caused due to Pasteurella bacteria and need to be safeguarded. A healthy rabbit will not get affected and if you happen to suspect visit vet.
Viral Heamoragic disease (V.H.D.) is an airborne disease. This disease passes from one rabbit to another. It would cause rabbit to bleeding of lungs, urinary tract, and gut. Signs of diarrhea could cause death in following 2 to 4 days. You can get you rabbit vaccinated from the vet to avoid this.
General care
Mostly, neutered rabbits would survive longer. They are also destructive and less of aggressive and friendly to other rabbits. Female rabbits could be sprayed with it about four months and the males at three to four months. However, most of the vets prefer to wait till 6 months. In order to keep your pet in good condition and healthy being, you need to keep a proper care. Have a check on the pet’s coat while grooming. You also need to check nails and teeth twice a week.
